Can male enhancers be aphrodisiacs?

What puts you in the mood for love?  Well actually, what puts you in the mood for sex?  Do certain foods, scents or objects make you feel sexually aroused? Some foods, drinks, scents, objects and magic potions are thought to be aphrodisiacs.

Do aphrodisiacs exist or are they figments of our imagination?

Let’s start off by defining what an aphrodisiac is. The word ‘aphrodisiac’ has roots dating back to the days of Greek Mythology.  So named after Aphrodite, the goddess of love and sensuality, an aphrodisiac is any substance believed to create sexual desire.

Whether aphrodisiacs are based on fact or myth, there is scientific evidence to suggest that aphrodisiacs actually exist; however, these substances on their own are not the only things that are needed to create sexual desire.

The question is what else do we need to feel sexually aroused? Frankly speaking hormones – in particular testosterone!

There are many physiological and psychological factors that can affect a person’s sex drive. One major factor is hormone levels in the body.  When hormone levels are perfectly balanced, it’s easy for us to become sexually aroused.  When this happens, a chain reaction begins in the brain (the most vital sex organ).  The things we see, touch, hear, feel or smell can make us feel sexually stimulated. But when testosterone levels in the body are low, sexual desire decreases.  Low testosterone levels in men can be attributed to a number of factors such as age, stress, relationship issues and fatigue to name but a few. In fact, low testosterone levels are one of the reasons why many men suffer from Erectile Dysfunction (ED). Erectile Dysfunction also known as male impotence is the inability to achieve erection substantial enough for sexual activity.

Some studies revealed that aphrodisiacs can work in two ways: the first one being the type that works on the mind and the second one being the type that works on the body.  For example, chemicals that help increase blood flow to the sexual organs in the body can give the feeling of sexual desire. The same can be said for things that make our body produce more chemicals that relate to increased sex drive.

In recent years, ED prescription drugs such as Viagra, Levitra and Cialis have become very popular. While they have been proven highly effective in helping men with ED, they are not considered aphrodisiacs simply because they have one sole function – to induce an erection. These prescription drugs work by increasing nitric oxide (chemical needed for erection), but these medications have very little effect on hormone levels or the brain.  In fact, many men who take Viagra also require testosterone replacement because the medication doesn’t work on its own.

Research suggests that some foods, herbs and nutritional supplements can stimulate the production of hormones that affect a person’s sex drive. Actually, the herbs and minerals contained in many male enhancement supplements have been proven helpful in increasing blood flow to the genital areas while boosting nitric oxide and testosterone levels. They also work to relieve stress and rid the body of toxins. All of these factors combined can surely do wonders for libido. Many of these herbs have been in use for centuries because of their well known aphrodisiac effects.  For example, ingredients like Epimedium, Tongkat Ali and L-Arginine are commonly used in many natural male enhancers.

Some experts doubt the effectiveness or even the existence of aphrodisiacs.  This could be because sex drive is quite difficult to measure; however, we can’t ignore the fact that countless men have sworn by the effects of certain herbs and minerals (especially those contained in natural male enhancement supplements). Because of these products, their sex drives and overall health improved remarkably.

The subject of aphrodisiacs may have held more credibility in the past compared to today. Part of the reason could be that undernourishment was prevalent in yesterday’s society and food rich in nutrients wasn’t readily available to the average person as it is today. Truth be told, consuming foods and supplements rich in nutrients definitely influences your overall health which in turn affects sexual desire.

We all know that nourishing the body is important to maintaining a healthy sex life. Fortunately there are many proven natural male enhancement products that can help men improve their overall sexual health.  Think of them as the aphrodisiacs of the future.
