Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry says Acai highest ORAC

New research appearing in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry has found that although the Amazonian acai berry has the highest antioxidant content of any food, certain commercial processing methods may strip the fruit of much of its nutrition.

“We believe there are many reasons for the lower ORAC values of various acais that have been on the market for some time,” Schauss said. “First, freeze-drying is superior to spray drying or air drying in retaining phytochemicals and nutrients, but more expensive. We believe that other suppliers have not considered the issue of enzymatic degradation of the fruit.”

Much of the acai shipped from Brazil to the United States or Europe is sent in large frozen blocks that fail to prevent nutritional degradation, Schauss said. For that reason, many commercially available acai products have low ORAC levels.

Consumer advocate Mike Adams, author of “The Seven Laws of Nutrition,” said acai berries have a pleasant taste and provide high-density natural medicine to consumers.

“As with many of the smaller berries such as blueberries, sea buck-thorn and goji berries, acai berries pack a potent nutritional punch in a tiny package,” Adams said. “I recommend them to anyone interested in improving their health.”

Acai Berries Regulate Cholesterol

(Natural News) The long list of acai berry health benefits to the body just got a bit longer. According to a recent study published in the journal Nutrition, the acai berry is great for cholesterol regulation.

There’s no shortage of health claims when it comes to the acai berry (pronounced ah-sigh-EE,), the berry that’s been billed as the “Superfood of superfoods” by doctors and nutritionists alike. From better digestion to improved circulation, the acai berry could very well be the “berry best” in a family that’s already bursting with nutritional heavyweights.

The latest study to tout the acai berry’s benefits comes out of Brazil, the berry’s native land, where the pulp of acai was fed to two groups of rats. One of the groups had a standard rat diet, while the other had a high fat diet. The remaining rats had high fat diets but without the accompanying acai (there were four groupings of rats).

After six weeks of observation, the researchers found distinct differences in the blood work of the rats that supplemented with the acai and those that didn’t. Both acai supplementing groups had improvements in their cholesterol profile, but what really took the researchers by surprise was that the high fat rats had the best cholesterol profile (i.e., total cholesterol levels AND non-HDL levels dropped).

The researchers believe the acai berry was the catalyst, but it could also have been due to the fact that those fed the high fat diet consumed less food in terms of quantity (i.e., less food consumed, but more calories consumed).

Granted, this test was performed on rats, but observers of the study have every reason to suspect that the results can be translated to humans. More long-term studies are in the offing.

The acai berry is not something you’ll find nestled next to blueberries or strawberries at your local farmer’s market. Ninety percent of the berry is the pit, which may explain why you’ve seen people drinking acai berry juice but not eating the actual berry. But what an acai berry lacks in plumpness, it makes up for in nutrients. The flesh of one acai berry has 10 times the antioxidant content found in a grape, and two times the antioxidant content found in a blueberry.

Acai has only recently become an internationally popular super food. Yet it has been cherished by the native people of the Amazon for hundreds of years as a healing fruit. Modern Brazilians eat the acai berry because it tastes nice and is highly nutritious. The famous MMA UFC Gracie Jiu-Jitsu family recommended eating acai before workouts, and soccer players have been using the fruit as a natural energy booster. With its popularity skyrocketing, acai’s anti cancer potential is being researched.

Acai berries grow on palm trees in floodplain areas of the Amazon River. The berries are dark purple and about the size of a blueberry. Like blueberries, they are potent antioxidants.

What Makes Acai a Cancer Fighting Super Food?

Free radicals are harmful molecules caused by everything from pesticides and cigarette smoke to exercising. They can damage cells and even DNA. Free radical damage has been shown to be associated with a range of diseases such as arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and Cancer.

Nature’s antidote to free radicals come in the form of fruits and vegetables known as antioxidants, which strengthen cells and defends against free radicals. The amount of antioxidant power that a food has is known as its ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity score).

The Acai berry is one of the highest. Its ORAC score is 167, compared with 32 for blueberries and 14 for apples. The increase in high antioxidant foods is essential to combating the skyrocketing rate of cancer and other diseases.

Acai May Kill Cancer Cells

A study at The University of Florida discovered that acai berries caused human cancer cells to self destruct 86% of the time in a culture. While this research has only been shown in a cell culture model, it is likely that it will have the same effect on human beings.

The researchers plan to continue identifying how acai berries can prevent cancer. The assistant professor Talcott says “We are just beginning to understand the complexity of the acai berry and its health-promoting effects.” Studies at the University of Florida are also underway to determine the acai berry’s benefits on blood pressure, cholesterol levels, heart health and related health indicators.
While the acai berry hasn’t been proven to cure cancer, the research certainly looks promising and at the very least it is helpful in preventing cancer and other illnesses. Plus, it tastes delicious.

#1: Are pasteurized super fruit juice as healthy as raw juices?

No. Raw fruit juice is always healthier than pasteurized. Heat processing destroys a significant portion of the nutrients found in raw juice.

#2: Is the Bisphenol-A chemical in the plastic containers used with fruit juices a threat to my health?

A small threat, perhaps, but the health benefits of drinking super fruit juices greatly outweigh the health risks of plastics chemicals. Still, it’s better to drink such juices from glass containers, not plastic.

#3: Are organic fruit juices healthier than non-organic?

Yes! Organic fruits have much higher concentrations of phytonutrients (natural plant medicines), vitamins and minerals. Organic farming is also better for the environment. There is also no requirement that juice companies list the country of origin for their juice concentrates. For all you know, they may have been imported from China or some other country famous for exporting contaminated products.
